CONSENT, NOT RELINQUISHMENT

In adoption agency placements, the birth mother is required to sign relinquishment papers, giving custody of her baby to the agency, who will then transfer the custody to the parents that the birth mother selected. If, for any reason, the transfer falls through, the child returns to the custody of the agency, not to the birth mother.

Adoption California handles the matchmaking and finalization of independent adoptions. Because of this, when you work with Adoption California you will sign a consent document, NOT a relinquishment document. This means that you consent to your child being placed with the family of your choice. If for any reason that placement falls through, custody of the child returns to you, NOT to Adoption California. You are then free to choose another adoptive family for your child.
